A well written resume will never land the job but it can give you the opportunity to interview. A poorly written resume can make the best candidate not be considered. Hiring managers look at resumes to find a reason not to take the time to interview candidates so if it does not help you get an interview, don't put it in. The following resume tips should show you in the best possible light:
- Use a high-quality ink jet or laser printer with clear, easy to read fonts.
- Use quality paper in white or neutral tones.
- Use consistent margins.
- Do not overuse bold, underlining and italics.
- Keep resume to one page with two pages being the maximum.
- Save the resume as Microsoft Word readable or text file.
- Do not list a career objective because misinterpretation can take you out of consideration.
- Address the employer's needs with your resume.
- Be concise and explicit.
- Spell-check and proof-read repeatedly. Have someone else proof-read it, if possible.
- In the employment section:
- Use action verbs to start sentences--ie. accelerated, created, developed, streamlined, etc...
- Emphasize how your work benefited the employer–i.e. enabling the company to track attendance
- Quantify your accomplishments wherever possible–i.e. which saved the company $100,000.
- Integrate the technologies worked with at each employer–i.e. implemented c#.net.
- Make your abilities stand out and eliminate information that does not help you.
