The Resignation Meeting

  1. Be professional and courteous, not disgruntled or weak.
  2. Focus on the positive opportunity you have been offered with your new company.
  3. State that you've been presented with an opportunity that you cannot pass up.
  4. Do not feel pressured into giving reasons for resigning.
  5. Handle your resignation right the first time.
  6. Offer to help during the transition time.

Once the decision has been made to make a job change, it must be firm and final.   Reversing your decision is a costly career mistake. Counteroffers are tempting and ego-gratifying but interviews with thousands of employees who took counteroffers have shown the vast majority suffered serious career setbacks.

Resign by stating in unmistakable terms that your decision is final because it discourages a counteroffer from being made.   Avoiding counter-offers is the goal because accepting a counter-offer is career suicide and rejecting the counteroffer is the resignation meeting all over again that could be avoided with being very upfront.

If asked why you are leaving, it should be answered, "I have been presented with an opportunity that I cannot pass up".   Do not complain about anything because nothing is accomplished except leaving a bad impression.

If anything is said that even sounds like a lead into a counteroffer say, "Thank you but I am not interested.  I did not come here to force a bidding war.   I simply have been presented with an opportunity I cannot pass up.   Now, is there anything that I can do to help during the transition before my last day?"

During your resignation, be prepared for any reaction from a congratulatory handshake to guilt trips.   Remain calm and professional.   If anyone seems upset, tell them, "I am sorry this upset you.   It was not my intention.   What can I do to help during the transition period?"
