The Resignation Letter

The letter should be brief, simple, and positive.   It should contain an unmistakable statement of resignation, an expression of thanks for the professional association, a final date of employment, and an expression of willingness to help during the transition period prior to your last day of work.   Use the following example :

I have accepted an offer with another firm and have decided to tender my resignation. My last date of employment will be (Last date you plan to work at your current employer—a 2 week notice is customary). This decision has nothing to do with the exceptional opportunity you have provided me. You and the company have been more than fair with me and I appreciate your support.

My decision reflects careful thought and analysis of all factors involved, compelling me to accept a position with another company that was too good to turn down.   Because of the factors involved and the commitment I made to my new employer, I will not accept a counter-offer.

I wish the company continued success, and I want to thank you for allowing me to be a part of your team. Feel free to contact me if I can be of further assistance in helping with a smooth transition.

Nothing is gained by venting and you may work with these people at a future employer.  Be cautious not to add to the letter as it may be misinterpreted.  Any less and the necessary points will not get made and it can cause unnecessary frustration for you and the company.
