If you are wondering if you should accept a job offer, you should ask yourself the following questions:
- Which position will best advance my career?
- Where am I better off career-wise in the long-term?
- Where am I better off financially in the long-term?
- If unemployed, would I be better off going to my current employer or the new employer?
- If I do not accept, when will my next career opportunity come and what will it be?
- Am I prepared to stay at my current employer indefinitely?
Above all think logically.
A person's familiarity with their current employer clouds the decision. Many times, an employee will mistakenly stay in a worse employment situation because of familiarity with the current employer. Employment changes are like journeys into the unknown. Through change, we grow and become more marketable with diverse experience.
Most often, pride enters into the decision. If pride is hampering a person's decision-making ability, they will think, "If a company wants me, they will have to pay me 10% more than I am currently earning." Instead of going to a better career opportunity, those people will stay at a less desirable career opportunity because of pride. The decision should not be how much will the new opportunity have to pay to make me leave. The decision must always be am I better off in my current situation or in the new career opportunity with a new salary, having new duties and gaining new experience?
If your current opportunity is better, you need to stay. If the new opportunity is better, for your sake and the sake of those that depend on your career, you need to make the change to the new and better career opportunity.
